Your 2023 Compass won't recognize the key fob—you can't unlock the doors or start the vehicle. Before calling a tow truck, several simple causes and workarounds can get you back on the road.
How Keyless Entry Works
The key fob communicates wirelessly with your Compass. For entry, it uses low-frequency signals. For starting, it uses both low and high-frequency signals when inside the vehicle. Failures at either stage prevent normal operation.
Quick Fixes to Try
- Replace fob battery - Most common cause; uses CR2032
- Try the backup fob - Determines if fob or vehicle issue
- Hold fob against start button - Emergency start method
- Use physical key - Hidden inside fob for door unlock
Emergency Start Procedure
If the fob battery is dead:
- Place the fob directly against the start button
- Press brake and push start button
- The close proximity allows weak signal to work
Common Causes
- Dead fob battery - Most common by far
- Interference - Other devices or metal objects
- Vehicle battery weak - Can't power detection system
- Fob damage - Water, drops, or internal failure
- Module failure - Vehicle receiver problem
Battery Replacement
- Find the small slot on fob edge
- Pry apart the two halves carefully
- Remove old CR2032 battery
- Insert new battery positive side up
- Snap halves back together
If Both Fobs Fail
If neither fob works, the problem is vehicle-side:
- 12V battery may be too weak
- Keyless entry module may have failed
- Wiring issue possible
Repair Costs
- Fob battery: $5-$10
- New key fob: $200-$400 (programmed)
- Module replacement: $300-$800
