The 2020 Nissan Leaf Plus uses the CHAdeMO standard for DC fast charging, supporting up to 100 kW charging on the 62 kWh battery. When CHAdeMO charging errors occur, understanding the causes helps identify whether the issue is with the vehicle, the station, or the charging conditions.
CHAdeMO Charging in the Leaf
CHAdeMO (short for "CHArge de MOve") is a DC fast charging standard developed in Japan. The Leaf has used this standard since its introduction. The 2020 Leaf Plus can charge from 20% to 80% in approximately 40-60 minutes at a capable station.
The CHAdeMO port is the larger, separate port next to the J1772 AC port on the Leaf's nose. It requires the distinctive CHAdeMO connector that differs from the CCS standard used by most other EVs.
Common Charging Error Causes
Station maintenance issues are frequent culprits. CHAdeMO stations are often older installations with varying maintenance quality. Damaged cables, worn connectors, or software issues at the station cause charging failures.
Battery temperature affects charge acceptance. The Leaf's air-cooled battery heats up during driving and may be too hot for optimal fast charging. If you've been driving hard or it's a hot day, the battery management system limits charging or stops it entirely to prevent damage.
Low battery temperature also causes issues. Very cold batteries can't accept fast charging safely. The Leaf may warm the battery before charging can begin, or charging may fail if the battery can't reach adequate temperature.
Troubleshooting Steps
Try a different CHAdeMO station if available. This rules out station-specific issues. Ensure the connector is fully seated—CHAdeMO connectors must latch securely. Check that your Leaf's charge port is clean and undamaged.
If the battery is very hot or cold, wait 15-20 minutes before attempting fast charging. Parking in shade (if hot) or using the cabin heater (if cold) can help moderate battery temperature.
CHAdeMO Network Limitations
CHAdeMO infrastructure is declining in the US as CCS becomes dominant. Station availability and maintenance vary significantly. Plan charging stops with backup options and consider having charging network memberships activated before you need them.
