Occupant Classification Purpose
The occupant sensing system determines if the front passenger seat is occupied and estimates occupant size/weight. This allows the SRS to disable the airbag for empty seats, suppress or reduce deployment for children, and fully deploy for adult passengers. Proper classification helps prevent airbag injuries.
Passenger Safety Concern
With U0153 present, the airbag light illuminates. The system may default to either always-on or always-off for the passenger airbag, neither of which is optimal. The 'Passenger Airbag Off' indicator may illuminate unexpectedly or remain constantly on or off regardless of passenger presence.
