Code U0131 on the 2022 Subaru Forester indicates lost communication with the Electric Power Steering (EPS) control module. This module provides the steering assist that makes the Forester easy to steer, especially at low speeds and during parking.
EPS Module Communication
The EPS module receives vehicle speed data from the CAN network to adjust steering assist - maximum assist at low speeds for easy parking, reduced assist at highway speeds for better road feel. It also communicates steering torque data used by EyeSight and other driver assist systems. Communication loss affects all these functions.
Steering Effects
With U0131 present, the EPS warning light illuminates on the dashboard. Steering effort increases significantly, making the vehicle feel heavy, especially during parking maneuvers. The EPS may provide no assist at all, or may revert to a fixed assist level regardless of speed. EyeSight features using steering data are disabled.
Diagnostic Focus
The EPS module is integrated with the electric motor on the steering column or rack depending on configuration. Check the EPS connector for damage - these modules are exposed to temperature extremes. Verify power and ground supplies, including the high-current motor supply. Test CAN communication at the module.
Repair Path
Address power supply and connector issues first. If the EPS module has failed, replacement involves steering system work and requires Subaru SSM for calibration. The torque sensor neutral point must be learned after EPS service.
