The 2023 Ram 3500's Cummins diesel uses a DEF delivery pump module to supply fluid to the exhaust injector. When the pump fails, DEF can't reach the SCR catalyst, triggering warnings and eventual derating.
DEF Pump Module Function
The pump module draws DEF from the tank, pressurizes it, and delivers it to the injector. The module contains the pump, filter, and pressure sensors as an integrated unit.
Signs of DEF Pump Failure
Low DEF Pressure Warning
The system monitors delivery pressure. Failed pumps can't maintain required pressure, triggering warnings before complete failure.
DEF System Fault Messages
Various messages indicate DEF system problems. Pump failure typically presents as delivery or pressure issues rather than quality faults.
No DEF Flow
Complete pump failure prevents any DEF delivery. The SCR catalyst can't reduce NOx without DEF injection.
Countdown Timer
As with other DEF faults, pump failure initiates the speed-limiting countdown if not repaired.
Module Replacement
DEF pump modules are typically replaced as complete units. Individual pump repair isn't practical for most service facilities.
