When Your RAV4 Can't Make Up Its Mind
You press the gas and your 2020 RAV4 can't decide what to do. It lurches forward, hesitates, maybe jerks again. It's like the transmission is having an argument with itself. P0715 points to the cause: the transmission input speed sensor isn't talking to the computer properly.
What P0715 Jerking Feels Like
- Jerk or lurch when accelerating from a stop
- Harsh or delayed shifts
- Transmission seems to "search" for gears
- Speedometer may fluctuate or read wrong
- RPMs jump without corresponding acceleration

What the Input Speed Sensor Does
The transmission input/turbine speed sensor measures how fast the torque converter's turbine is spinning. The computer compares this to the output speed sensor to determine if the transmission is slipping and what gear to command. Without accurate input speed data, shifts are jerky because the computer is guessing.
Why P0715 Happens
Sensor Failure
Speed sensors use magnetic pickups that wear out over time. Heat cycles, vibration, and contamination all contribute. The sensor can fail completely or give intermittent readings.
Wiring/Connector Issues
The sensor plugs into a harness that runs outside the transmission. Rodent damage, corrosion, or a loose connector can cause intermittent signal loss that mimics sensor failure.
Metallic Debris Contamination
The sensor is magnetic. If transmission fluid has metal particles from wear, they can coat the sensor and interfere with readings. This is often a sign of bigger internal problems.
Transmission Fluid Issues
Low or degraded fluid affects how the torque converter behaves, which changes the relationship between input and output speed. The computer sees this as a sensor problem.
Diagnostic Approach
- Check transmission fluid - Level and condition (burnt smell or dark color is bad)
- Inspect wiring to sensor - Look for obvious damage, test connector for corrosion
- Test sensor with a multimeter - Check resistance against specification
- Compare input and output readings - Live data should show both sensors tracking together
- Check for metal in fluid - Drain and inspect—glitter means internal wear
