Tracking P0455 on Your 2019 BMW X5
P0455 on your 2019 X5 (G05) means a large EVAP leak. As the first year of the current generation, your X5 is out of basic warranty but emissions coverage applies. Gas cap first, then the BMW Leak Detection Pump.
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- P0455 in DME
- Fuel smell possible
- Emissions test failure
Causes by Likelihood
- Gas Cap Seal (Very High Likelihood): Worn after 5+ years. $15–$30.
- EVAP Leak Detection Pump (Medium-High Likelihood): Common at this age. $280–$500 installed.
- Purge Valve (Medium Likelihood): Age-related sticking. $200–$380 installed.
- Fuel Tank Vent Valve (Medium Likelihood): Seal deterioration. $220–$420 installed.
- Vapor Lines (Low Likelihood): Heat damage. $100–$280.
Diagnosis
New gas cap first. If P0455 persists, a smoke test ($80–$150) or ISTA diagnostics will find the leak. The LDP is increasingly common at 5+ years on BMWs.
Warranty
BMW's 4yr/50k warranty has expired. Federal emissions (8yr/80k) covers EVAP through 2027. Check mileage.
Safe to Drive?
Yes. P0455 doesn't affect the engine, xDrive, or any systems.
