Code P0443 on the 2024 Kia Sportage indicates a malfunction in the EVAP (Evaporative Emission Control) purge valve circuit. The purge valve controls when fuel vapors stored in the charcoal canister are drawn into the engine to be burned.
Purge Valve Function
The EVAP system stores fuel vapors in a charcoal canister rather than releasing them to the atmosphere. When conditions are appropriate, the ECM commands the purge valve open, allowing engine vacuum to draw these vapors into the intake manifold to be combusted. The purge valve is normally closed.
P0443 Circuit Issues
P0443 indicates an electrical fault in the purge valve circuit - the ECM detects open, short, or high resistance when commanding the valve. This could be the valve solenoid itself, wiring to the valve, connector problems, or ECM driver circuit issues.
Symptoms
With a faulty purge valve circuit, you may notice fuel odor (vapors not being purged), rough idle when purge is commanded, or no obvious symptoms. The EVAP system monitor won't complete, preventing readiness for emissions testing.
Diagnostic Approach
Locate the purge valve and test its solenoid resistance. Verify the ECM commands reach the valve. Check wiring between the ECM and valve for opens, shorts, or damage. Command the valve with a scanner and verify operation.
