The 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 3500's Duramax diesel relies on glow plugs for cold starting assistance. When glow plugs fail, cold starts become difficult or impossible, and code P0380 may set.
Glow Plug Function
Glow plugs heat the combustion chamber to help ignite fuel in cold conditions. The system activates before and during cranking, providing the heat needed for diesel combustion when ambient temperatures are low.
Symptoms of Glow Plug Failure
Extended Cranking
Cold starts require longer cranking as remaining glow plugs try to compensate. Multiple failed plugs may prevent starting entirely.
White Smoke at Startup
Incomplete combustion from inadequate cylinder heat produces white smoke until the engine warms.
Rough Idle When Cold
Cylinders with failed glow plugs run rough until heat from combustion warms the engine enough for normal operation.
Wait-to-Start Light Issues
The glow plug indicator may stay on longer or not illuminate at all if the control module detects faults.
Glow Plug Diagnostics
Individual glow plug resistance testing identifies failed units. The glow plug control module can also fail, affecting all plugs.
