The 2021 GMC Sierra 3500's Duramax diesel relies on glow plugs for cold starting. When the glow plug system faults, cold starts become difficult and code P0380 may set.
Glow Plug System Components
The system includes individual glow plugs in each cylinder, a glow plug control module, and related wiring. The control module monitors plug function and reports faults to the ECU.
Symptoms of Glow Plug Problems
Extended Cranking
Cold starts require longer cranking as fewer working glow plugs try to heat the combustion chambers. Multiple failed plugs may prevent starting in cold conditions.
White Smoke at Startup
Cylinders without glow plug heat experience incomplete combustion, producing white smoke until the engine warms.
Rough Cold Idle
Cylinders with failed glow plugs run poorly until combustion heat warms them. Rough running typically improves as the engine reaches operating temperature.
Wait-to-Start Light Issues
The glow plug indicator may behave abnormally - staying on too long, not illuminating, or flashing - if the control module detects faults.
