When Saving Fuel Causes Problems
Your 2021 Silverado's Active Fuel Management (AFM) or Dynamic Fuel Management (DFM) system shuts down cylinders to save fuel. Great in theory. But when P0300 random misfire codes appear and the truck runs rough, that fuel-saving technology may be the culprit.
GM's cylinder deactivation has a controversial history. Let's dig in.
What You're Experiencing
- Rough idle or vibration
- P0300 random misfire code
- May also have individual cylinder misfire codes
- Engine sounds "lumpy" or uneven
- Possible excessive oil consumption
- Ticking or lifter noise
AFM vs. DFM: What's the Difference?
- AFM (Active Fuel Management) - Deactivates 4 cylinders (runs on 4 of 8)
- DFM (Dynamic Fuel Management) - Can run on 1-8 cylinders in 17 patterns
The 2021 Silverado with the 5.3L or 6.2L likely has DFM. Both systems use special lifters that collapse to deactivate cylinders.
The Lifter Problem
GM's AFM/DFM lifters have a failure pattern. The lifters that enable cylinder deactivation can:
- Collapse at wrong times
- Fail to re-engage properly
- Cause rough running and misfires
- Damage camshafts in severe cases
This has resulted in class action lawsuits and extended warranties on some models.
Diagnosis
- Check for lifter noise - Ticking that follows RPM suggests lifter issues
- Monitor misfire counts - See which cylinders are misfiring most
- Check oil level and condition - AFM/DFM requires proper oil
- Look for GM TSBs - Multiple bulletins address AFM/DFM issues
- Disable AFM/DFM temporarily - See if symptoms improve
Your Options
Lifter Replacement
Replace failed lifters with new GM lifters. May fail again eventually.
AFM/DFM Delete
Replace AFM/DFM lifters with standard lifters and reprogram the computer to disable the system. This is a popular permanent fix.
Disabler Device
Plug-in devices (like Range AFM Disabler) keep the system from activating. Doesn't fix failed lifters but can prevent future failures.
Repair Costs
- AFM/DFM disabler device: $250 - $400
- Lifter replacement (labor-intensive): $2,500 - $5,000
- Complete AFM delete (lifters, cam, tune): $3,500 - $6,000
- Camshaft replacement (if damaged): Add $500 - $1,500
Warranty and Recalls
Check if your VIN is covered by any GM lifter-related service bulletins or warranty extensions. The 2021 may be covered under the 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty. Document symptoms thoroughly.
