The 2023 Ford F-350's 6.7L Power Stroke uses a Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT) with an electronic actuator. Actuator failure causes boost loss, reduced power, and code P0299.
VGT System Overview
The variable geometry turbo adjusts vane position to optimize boost at all engine speeds. An electronic actuator mounted on the turbo controls vane position based on ECU commands.
Symptoms of Actuator Failure
Loss of Power
Without proper vane control, the turbo can't produce appropriate boost. Acceleration becomes sluggish and towing capability diminishes significantly.
P0299 Turbo Underboost
This code indicates boost pressure is below expected levels. While multiple causes exist, actuator failure is common.
Excessive Black Smoke
Incorrect vane position can cause rich running conditions with visible black smoke during acceleration.
Turbo Surge
Stuck or erratic vanes can cause turbo surge - a pulsing or hunting sensation during boost buildup.
Actuator Diagnosis
The actuator can be tested for proper movement range using diagnostic equipment. Binding vanes, electrical faults, or position sensor issues all manifest as actuator problems.
