What P0175 Means on the 2022 Chevrolet Equinox
A P0175 code on your 2022 Equinox indicates the ECM has detected a rich fuel condition. The 2022 Equinox uses a 1.5L turbocharged four-cylinder engine (LE2/LYX) producing 170 horsepower, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. This is the previous-generation Equinox on the D2XX platform. As an inline four-cylinder, the P0175 Bank 2 designation refers to a secondary monitoring circuit in the exhaust.
The 1.5L Turbo Engine
GM's 1.5L turbo in the 2022 Equinox uses both direct and port injection. The dual injection system helps reduce carbon buildup on intake valves while maintaining combustion efficiency. However, it also means there are more potential injector failure points. The engine is transverse-mounted in the compact Equinox engine bay, which can make some repairs tighter than on larger vehicles.
Symptoms
- Check engine light active
- Fuel economy below the rated 26 city / 31 highway MPG
- Rough or unsteady idle
- Black or dark exhaust emissions
- Turbo hesitation during acceleration
- Fuel odor from the exhaust
Common Causes
1. MAF Sensor Contamination
At 20,000-40,000 miles, the MAF sensor can accumulate enough PCV blow-by residue and environmental dust to affect fuel trims. The 1.5L turbo's compact intake routing exposes the MAF to more underhood heat than in some vehicles. Cleaning with dedicated spray is the first diagnostic step and costs under $15.
2. O2 Sensor Degradation
The upstream O2 sensor on the Equinox monitors exhaust composition. Turbo-heated exhaust accelerates sensor aging. At 30,000-40,000 miles, premature failure is possible, particularly if the engine has experienced any coolant or oil consumption issues that contaminate the sensor. Test with live data for switching speed and voltage range.
3. Fuel Injector Issue
With both direct and port injectors, there are eight injectors on this four-cylinder engine. A direct injector that leaks at high pressure or a port injector with a worn O-ring can add excess fuel. Check for companion misfire codes to narrow down the affected cylinder and injector type.
4. Turbo Boost Leak
The charge air system on the 1.5L turbo includes an intercooler and multiple connections. A loose coupler or cracked pipe allows pressurized air to escape. The ECM delivers fuel based on MAF readings that assumed all the air would reach the cylinders, creating a rich condition when some escapes through the leak.
Diagnosis
- Scan for all codes and check freeze frame data
- Monitor fuel trims at idle, cruise, and under boost
- Clean the MAF sensor as the first step
- Test the upstream O2 sensor with live data
- Check the charge air system for boost leaks
- Inspect both direct and port injectors for proper operation
- Verify fuel rail pressure against specification
Repair Costs
MAF cleaning: under $15. O2 sensor: $140-$310. Direct injector: $250-$600. Port injector: $100-$250. Boost repair: $50-$250. The 2022 Equinox's powertrain warranty extends through 2027 depending on mileage.
Priority
Fix within two to three weeks. The Equinox's smaller catalytic converter is more vulnerable to damage from rich running than a larger truck converter. The compact engine also experiences oil dilution more quickly from excess fuel washing past piston rings.
