The 2023 Toyota Sequoia's 3.4L twin-turbocharged V6 engine uses valve covers that seal with gaskets susceptible to deterioration over time. When these gaskets fail, oil leaks externally and may also enter spark plug tubes, causing multiple symptoms that require attention.
Valve Cover Gasket Function
Valve covers enclose the top of each cylinder head, containing oil that lubricates the camshafts and valvetrain. The gasket between the cover and head must seal against oil pressure and crankcase vapors while enduring constant temperature cycling. Spark plug tube seals, integrated into or separate from the main gasket, prevent oil from entering the plug wells.
Why Gaskets Fail
Valve cover gasket failure results from heat-related hardening and compression set over time, oil and chemical degradation of rubber materials, improper torque during installation (over or under-tightening), and cover warping from thermal stress or previous over-tightening. Even quality gaskets eventually lose their sealing ability.
Symptoms of Valve Cover Leaks
External valve cover leaks show as oil dripping down the side of the engine, burning oil smell from oil contacting hot exhaust components, visible oil residue along the valve cover-to-head joint, and low oil level with no other apparent leak source. Spark plug tube seal failure causes oil fouling of spark plugs, misfires, and oil in the plug wells when plugs are removed.
Diagnostic Process
Clean the valve cover area and run the engine while watching for fresh oil seepage at the gasket line. Remove spark plug coils and inspect plug wells for oil accumulation indicating tube seal failure. Check the perimeter of both valve covers (V6 has two) for leak evidence. Note that oil dripping down from above may make valve cover appear to leak when the source is elsewhere.
Repair Procedure
Valve cover gasket replacement involves removing coils, brackets, and covers, cleaning all mating surfaces thoroughly, installing new gasket and tube seals, and torquing the cover in proper sequence to specification. Some covers use RTV sealant at specific points in addition to the formed gasket. Replace any oil-contaminated spark plugs and verify proper operation after repair.
