Note: P0128 is "Coolant Thermostat (Coolant Temperature Below Thermostat Regulating Temperature)," not an ambient air temperature code. If your 2019 Genesis G80 is showing P0128, the engine isn't warming up to proper operating temperature within expected timeframes.
What P0128 Actually Means
P0128 indicates the engine coolant hasn't reached the temperature the thermostat should maintain. After sufficient operating time, if coolant temperature remains below the thermostat's rated temperature, the ECU determines the thermostat is malfunctioning (likely stuck open).
G80 Cooling System
The 2019 Genesis G80 offers 3.3L V6 (including twin-turbo) and 5.0L V8 engines. All require precise temperature management for performance and emissions. A cold-running engine wastes fuel, produces more emissions, and may have reduced performance.
Common Causes of P0128
A stuck-open thermostat is the primary cause. The thermostat should stay closed during warm-up, preventing coolant flow to the radiator. If stuck open, coolant circulates continuously, and the engine can't build up to operating temperature.
A missing or incorrect thermostat causes the same issue. Some owners remove thermostats thinking it prevents overheating, but this prevents proper operation.
An underperforming cooling fan running continuously can prevent the engine from warming up in cold weather, though this is rare.
Diagnostic Approach
Monitor coolant temperature during driving. Normal warm-up should reach 195-220°F within 10-15 minutes. If temperature stays low (160-180°F) or takes excessive time to warm up, the thermostat is suspect. Touch the upper radiator hose during warm-up—it should stay cool until the thermostat opens, then become hot.
