What Battery Preconditioning Does
Battery preconditioning warms or cools the battery pack before DC fast charging or in extreme temperatures. The Ultium battery performs optimally within a specific temperature range. Preconditioning ensures the battery reaches this range, enabling faster charging and protecting battery longevity.
The Prologue can automatically precondition when you set a DC fast charging station as your navigation destination. The system calculates arrival time and conditions the battery accordingly.
Normal Preconditioning Behavior
You may notice the vehicle using energy to heat or cool the battery before arriving at a fast charger. This reduces available range slightly but enables faster charging. The system may run fans or heat pumps even when parked to manage battery temperature.
In cold weather, preconditioning uses significant energy. A cold-soaked battery may need 15-30 minutes of conditioning before accepting optimal charge rates. This is normal behavior, not a malfunction.
Preconditioning Problems
If preconditioning doesn't activate when expected, check that a DC fast charger is set as your navigation destination. The feature may require specific settings to be enabled. Verify in vehicle settings that battery preconditioning is turned on.

Impact on Charging Speed

If charging seems slow even at a fast charger, check whether preconditioning was active during your drive. Starting preconditioning earlier (longer route to the charger) can help.
