When your 2022 Toyota RAV4 vibrates noticeably while stopped at red lights with the engine running, you're experiencing rough idle that may be magnified by worn motor mounts or other issues. This idle-specific vibration indicates the engine isn't running as smoothly as designed.
Idle Vibration Causes
At idle, the engine runs at its lowest RPM with minimal loads. This is when any smoothness issues become most apparent because there's no acceleration or road noise to mask them. Vibration at stops can come from the engine itself running rough, or from normal engine pulses being transmitted through worn mounts.
Engine Running Rough
If the engine idle itself has developed roughness, causes include: carbon buildup on intake valves (common on direct injection engines like the RAV4's), degraded spark plugs, dirty fuel injectors, or vacuum leaks allowing unmetered air. The engine should idle between 650-750 RPM smoothly.
Motor Mount Condition
Motor mounts isolate normal engine vibration from the vehicle body. As mounts age, they lose their dampening ability and transmit more vibration to passengers. Even with a smooth-running engine, worn mounts can make idle feel rougher than it should. The 2022 RAV4 shouldn't have mount wear yet unless defective.
Transmission in Drive vs Neutral
