The 2022 Tesla Model S features an all-new horizontal 17-inch touchscreen that serves as the primary interface for vehicle functions. When this screen fails, it significantly impacts the driving experience. Understanding the refreshed MCU system helps diagnose and address screen issues.
2022 Model S Display System
The refreshed Model S uses an AMD Ryzen-based MCU3 with a horizontally-oriented 17-inch screen. This system replaced the vertical screen and Intel-based MCU2. The new architecture generally provides improved reliability, but any computer system can experience failures.
Common Screen Issues
Software crashes may freeze or black out the display. The screen may become unresponsive to touch while displaying content. Display artifacts or partial screen failure indicate hardware issues. Overheating can cause temporary shutdown. Complete black screen may indicate MCU board failure or display connector issues.
Reset Procedures
Soft reboot: Press and hold both scroll wheels on the yoke (or steering wheel) for approximately 10 seconds until the Tesla logo appears. Hard reboot: With vehicle in Park, press and hold both scroll wheels plus brake pedal for 10 seconds. Power cycle: Go to Safety & Security > Power Off, wait 2-3 minutes without touching anything, then press brake pedal to wake vehicle.
When to Seek Service
If reboots don't restore screen function, or if the display has persistent hardware symptoms (dead pixels, lines, touch issues), schedule Tesla service. The 2022 MCU is under warranty and Tesla should repair or replace faulty units at no cost.
