Why Coolant Boils Over
The cooling system operates under pressure (typically 13-16 PSI) which raises coolant's boiling point above 220°F. When this pressure is lost or temperature exceeds limits, coolant boils. Boiling coolant can't absorb heat effectively, causing rapid temperature rise and overflow through the reservoir.
Common Causes
Coolant boiling over typically results from: failed radiator cap not holding pressure, blown head gasket allowing combustion gases into the cooling system, overheating from any cooling system failure, cracked reservoir or hose leaking pressure, or failed water pump not circulating coolant.
The Radiator Cap Factor

Head Gasket Concerns
If boilover accompanies white exhaust smoke, bubbling in the reservoir, or chocolate-milk-colored oil, the head gasket may have failed. Combustion gases entering the cooling system cause pressure spikes and boiling. This is a serious repair.
