Why Does My CR-V Smell Like a Gas Station?
You get in your 2021 CR-V and there's a faint—or not so faint—smell of gasoline. Maybe you noticed the oil level is actually higher than when it was changed. Congratulations, you've discovered oil dilution, the 1.5L turbo's not-so-secret problem.
This isn't normal. It's a known issue with Honda's Earth Dreams 1.5T engine, and you should understand what's happening.
Signs of Oil Dilution
- Gasoline smell inside the car
- Oil level higher than it should be
- Oil smells like gas when checked
- Oil appears thinner than normal
- Possible rough cold start
- Slight fuel economy decrease
What's Actually Happening
During cold starts and short trips, fuel is injected into the cylinders but doesn't fully burn. Some of this unburned fuel seeps past the piston rings and mixes with the engine oil. Over time, the oil becomes diluted with gasoline.
This is worse in cold climates and with driving patterns that don't let the engine fully warm up (short trips, city driving).
Why Oil Dilution Is Bad
- Reduced lubrication - Gasoline thins the oil, reducing its ability to protect engine components
- Accelerated wear - Thin oil leads to increased bearing, cam, and cylinder wear
- Potential overfill - Too much fluid in the crankcase can cause foaming and oil aeration

Honda's Response
Honda has acknowledged the issue and taken several steps:
- Software updates to increase cold-start warmup fuel burn
- Extended oil change recommendations in cold climates
- Increased engine idle time during warmup
- In some cases, warranty engine replacements for severely affected vehicles
What You Should Do
- Check oil regularly - Watch for rising oil level
- Smell the oil - Gas smell means dilution is occurring
- Change oil more frequently - Every 3,000-5,000 miles instead of 7,500
- Take longer trips - Let the engine fully warm up regularly to burn off contaminants
- Get the software update - Honda dealers can install updated calibration
- Document everything - If dilution is severe, you want a paper trail for warranty claims
When to Push Back
If you're experiencing significant oil dilution (oil level rising 1/2" or more between changes, strong gas smell), push Honda for warranty action. The powertrain warranty is 5 years/60,000 miles. Some owners have received new engines or extended warranty coverage.
Living With It
Mild dilution is manageable with frequent oil changes and regular longer trips. If you only do short-trip city driving in cold weather, the 1.5T may not be ideal for your use pattern. Severe dilution requires dealer intervention.
