When your 2021 Chevrolet Equinox sunroof needs calibration or isn't operating correctly after a battery disconnect or service, the system may have lost its position reference. Recalibrating the sunroof restores proper operation and one-touch features.
Why Sunroof Calibration Is Needed
The Equinox sunroof system tracks its position electronically. Calibration is needed after: battery replacement or disconnect, sunroof motor or switch replacement, manual closing using the emergency procedure, power interruption during operation, or when one-touch open/close stops working properly.
Signs of Lost Calibration
An uncalibrated sunroof may: only move when the switch is held (no one-touch), stop at random positions, not recognize fully open or closed positions, make unusual movements or hesitations, or display errors related to sunroof position.
Standard Reset Procedure
The typical GM sunroof reset procedure: Close the sunroof fully using the switch. Continue holding the close switch for 10-15 seconds after the sunroof reaches the closed position. Release the switch. Open fully by holding the open switch until it reaches the full open position. Continue holding for another 5-10 seconds. Release. The system should now be calibrated.
If Standard Reset Doesn't Work
Some vehicles require additional steps or a scan tool initialization. Try the procedure with the engine running for full voltage. If the sunroof has a tilt function, include full tilt in the cycle. Persistent calibration issues may require dealer-level diagnosis.
Preventing Future Issues
When disconnecting the battery for service, note that the sunroof may need recalibration afterward. Some technicians use memory savers to maintain system calibration during battery service.
