Note: The Chevrolet Bolt EUV was introduced for the 2022 model year, not 2021. If you have a 2022 or later Bolt EUV experiencing issues with one pedal driving, this guide explains the feature and troubleshooting steps.
What One Pedal Driving Does
One pedal driving increases regenerative braking force when you lift off the accelerator, slowing the vehicle significantly without pressing the brake pedal. In many situations, you can drive using only the accelerator—pressing to go, lifting to slow and stop. The feature maximizes energy recovery and reduces brake wear.
The Bolt EUV's one pedal driving can bring the vehicle to a complete stop and hold it there. When enabled, the brake lights automatically illuminate during deceleration.
Enabling One Pedal Driving
One pedal driving is activated via a button on the center console. When enabled, an indicator appears on the instrument cluster. The setting is not persistent—it must be reactivated each drive unless a persistent setting is enabled in the vehicle settings menu.
Common Issues
Feature not staying enabled between drives is a common complaint that's actually by design for safety. Check settings for an option to make one pedal driving the default. Some software versions added persistence options that weren't in earlier releases.
Reduced regenerative braking strength occurs when the battery is very cold or fully charged. A cold battery can't accept regenerative energy as quickly. A full battery has no room for additional energy. In both cases, the system reduces regenerative force and may feel like one pedal driving isn't working properly.
Error messages disabling regenerative braking indicate potential system faults. Issues with the drive motor, power electronics, or battery management can disable regeneration for safety.
When to Seek Service
If one pedal driving never works (even with a warm, partially charged battery) or is accompanied by warning messages, dealer diagnosis is warranted. The regenerative braking system involves high-voltage components requiring professional service.
