When your 2020 Dodge Charger suddenly develops a loud exhaust noise it didn't have before, something in the exhaust system has failed or become disconnected. Sudden onset indicates a specific failure point rather than gradual wear.
Exhaust Leak Development
Sudden loud exhaust typically results from a new leak - a gasket failure, cracked pipe, or separated connection. The Charger's exhaust has multiple connection points from the engine manifolds through to the tailpipe where leaks can develop. Leaks create a roaring or rumbling louder than normal exhaust.
Flex Pipe Failure
Many exhaust systems include flexible sections that accommodate engine movement. These flex pipes can crack or separate suddenly after internal deterioration, creating an immediate loud exhaust sound. Flex pipe failure is common at the 3-5 year age of your Charger.
Broken Exhaust Hangers
Exhaust hangers suspend the system below the vehicle. When hangers break, exhaust components can drop or shift, potentially separating connections. A dragging exhaust makes scraping sounds in addition to louder engine noise.
Muffler or Resonator Failure
Mufflers and resonators quiet exhaust sound. Internal failure (baffles breaking loose) or external rust-through creates sudden volume increase. A failed muffler may sound like the exhaust has been modified - much louder than stock.
Catalytic Converter Issues
Catalytic converters can fail internally with substrate breaking apart, or externally from theft (a significant concern with Chargers). A stolen catalytic converter creates extremely loud exhaust. Internal failure may rattle as well as being louder.
Visual Inspection
Safely inspect the exhaust system visually - look for disconnections, holes, or obviously damaged sections. With the engine running (carefully, as exhaust is hot), you may be able to hear or feel where the leak is located.
