A leaking heater hose in your 2019 Ram 2500 allows coolant to escape the cooling system, potentially leading to overheating and leaving you without cabin heat. These hoses carry hot coolant to and from the heater core, and their failure requires prompt attention.
Heater Hose Function
Two heater hoses connect the engine's cooling system to the heater core inside the dashboard. The inlet hose carries hot coolant from the engine to the heater core; the outlet hose returns cooled coolant back. These hoses are under cooling system pressure and carry coolant at operating temperature.
Why Heater Hoses Fail
Heater hoses deteriorate from heat exposure, age, and chemical breakdown. The rubber becomes brittle, develops cracks, and eventually fails. Connection points where hoses clamp to fittings are common leak locations—clamps loosen over time, and hose ends deteriorate first from constant compression. Quick-connect fittings can also fail.
Recognizing Heater Hose Leaks
Signs include coolant puddles under the vehicle (often on the passenger side near the firewall), sweet coolant smell, steam from the engine compartment, and coolant level dropping. If a hose fails completely, rapid coolant loss and overheating occur quickly.
Locating the Leak
Trace the heater hoses from the firewall to the engine. Look for wetness, staining, or white/green deposits that indicate dried coolant. Squeeze hoses to check for soft spots or swelling. Examine connection points for seepage. A cooling system pressure test can reveal slow leaks that aren't visually obvious.
Temporary Measures
In an emergency, tightening clamps may temporarily slow seepage from connection points. For hole or crack leaks, bypassing the heater core (connecting the two hoses together) eliminates the leak but sacrifices cabin heat—an option only in warm weather for driving to a repair facility.
Proper Repair
Heater hose replacement involves draining some coolant, removing clamps, detaching old hoses, and installing new ones. Pre-formed hoses maintain proper routing; generic hose may be used for straight runs. Replace both hoses if one has failed—the other has similar age and wear. Refill coolant and bleed air from the system.
