Parking Pawl Operation
The transmission's parking pawl is a small metal piece that engages a gear to lock the output shaft when you select Park. If the pawl or its engagement gear is worn, chipped, or damaged, grinding can occur when shifting into or out of Park, or even while sitting in Park.
Parking on Inclines
If the vehicle is parked on an incline and the parking brake isn't set before releasing the foot brake, vehicle weight loads against the parking pawl. This can cause grinding or clicking when shifting out of Park. Always set the parking brake first when parking on inclines.
Transfer Case Involvement
On 4WD Sierras, the transfer case can contribute to Park-position noises. Transfer case components may settle or have play that creates sounds when the vehicle isn't being driven. This might not indicate failure but should be monitored.
Driveshaft Movement
With the transmission output shaft locked by the parking pawl, driveshaft components between transmission and axle should be stationary. Worn U-joints or slip yokes may still have slight movement or play that creates noise even in Park.
