When your 2019 Buick Enclave produces a gurgling noise from the dashboard area, air is trapped in the cooling system and moving through the heater core. This gurgling indicates a coolant system issue that needs attention to prevent overheating.
Air in the Cooling System
The heater core uses engine coolant to warm the cabin. Air trapped in the cooling system collects at high points like the heater core, creating gurgling or sloshing sounds as coolant and air bubbles flow through together. This air shouldn't be present in a properly filled system.
Low Coolant Level
The most common cause of air in the system is low coolant level. Check the coolant reservoir and radiator (when cold) for proper fill level. Low coolant means air has taken its place somewhere in the system. Determine why coolant is low - leaks need to be found and repaired.
Coolant Leak Sources
Coolant doesn't evaporate significantly in a sealed system. Low coolant indicates a leak - from hoses, the radiator, water pump, heater core, or internally (head gasket). Look for puddles under the vehicle, white residue on hoses, or sweet coolant smell from the HVAC.
Head Gasket Concerns
Internal coolant leaks from head gasket failure allow combustion gases into the cooling system, creating air pockets and gurgling. This is serious and typically accompanied by other symptoms: overheating, white exhaust smoke, or oil/coolant mixing.
Thermostat Issues
A stuck thermostat can create coolant flow irregularities that trap air or prevent proper bleeding of the system. If gurgling accompanies temperature gauge fluctuations, the thermostat may be involved.
Bleeding the Cooling System
After addressing the root cause (leak, low level, etc.), the cooling system may need bleeding to remove trapped air. The Enclave may have bleeder valves or require a specific fill procedure. Proper bleeding eliminates gurgling sounds.
