The 2015 BMW X5 with optional air suspension provides adjustable ride height and comfort, but when the air suspension compressor fails, you'll notice the vehicle sagging, ride height warnings, and inability to adjust suspension settings. BMW Air Suspension System Overview
The air suspension uses air springs (bellows) at each corner instead of conventional coil springs. The compressor generates pressurized air stored in a reservoir, which the valve block distributes to individual air springs based on DME commands. Height sensors at each corner monitor ride height, and the system adjusts automatically or per driver selection.
Symptoms of Compressor Failure
The vehicle sits low, especially after sitting overnight, and struggles or fails to rise when started. The compressor runs constantly trying to build pressure. 'Self-leveling inactive' or suspension warning messages appear on the dash. The compressor may become noticeably noisy before complete failure. In some cases, the compressor thermal protection triggers, causing intermittent operation.
What Causes Compressor Failure
Air leaks in the system force the compressor to run excessively, overheating and wearing it prematurely. The air dryer, which removes moisture from compressed air, can become saturated, allowing moisture to damage internal compressor components. Electrical issues including relay or wiring failures prevent proper operation. Age and accumulated run hours eventually wear out any compressor.
Diagnostic and Repair Process
Listen for compressor operation when starting the vehicle or after height adjustment command. Check for air leaks at all four air springs, along air lines, and at the valve block using soapy water or electronic leak detector. Test compressor electrical supply and ground. If compressor is confirmed failed, replace along with fresh air dryer. Address any air leaks that may have caused premature failure.
